Readers interested in the development of this side of the city might be interested in a walking tour taking place this Sunday (8th June), led by well-known local historian and tour guide Allan Brigham. “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” runs from 5pm to 6.30pm, will be looking at how successful we’ve been (or haven’t been!) at making this area an attractive place to live. The walk starts with a look at the Leisure Park, and will visit the Brooklands Avenue developments before finishing with a stroll along Hobson’s Conduit. It’s probably fair to say that the architects behind “The Marque” won’t be lavished with unstinting praise.
The walk costs ?6.50, with no tickets – just turn up on the day. There’s more information at Alan’s Facebook page here or at his website here.
Thanks, Chris. I wasn’t here for the walk, but do your readers all know about the book Hideous Cambridge, by David Jones (ISBN 9 780992 607302 — I bought mine in the Cambridge Collection bit of the Central Library)? Allan Brigham himself gives it a rave review on the back cover. It covers the whole city, and traces a pattern that has gone on for a hundred years or more, of utter incompetence on the part of the planners. Brilliant – (and an ideal gift for the right person).
